Hello new user

Post by KenS. »

Hi there, I am a novice at electronics and just purchased a PicoScope 2205A. I haven't recieved it yet, maybe this weekend. Anyway, my hobby is programming the C64, C128 and waiting on my Mega65 computer. I just built a DIY 1581. I wish I would have thought about these questions found in various troubleshooting manuals for the C64, C128 and the drives 1541, 1581 and the 1571. (I have a 1571) before ordering. Would the PicoScope 2205A be able to measure the IC's pins (such as MOS 6502/6510 CPU, 6522 VIA, 6567 VIC II and the 8564 VDC) using some of these steps found in the manuals.

Measure Logic Low (<0.8v) for at least 8 microseconds, then swing to a Logic High (>3.5v). (MOS 6502 CPU).
Display a square wave with a period of 1.0 microseconds. Lowest point of square wave must be <0.8v and highset point >3.5v. (MOS 6522 VIA).
Display a square wave with a period of appox. 82 nanoseconds. Lowest point of square wave must be <0.8v and the highest point must be >3.5v (MOS 6502 CPU).
Measure PHI Color signal on pin. Result=14.3 Mhz (MOS 6567 VIC II).
Measure PHI IN signal on pin Result=8.18 Mhz. (MOS 6567 VIC II).
Measure PHI 0IN signal on pin. Result=1.0 Mhz (MOS 6510 CPU).
Measure PHI PHI signal on pin. Result= 16 Mhz. (MOS 8564 VDC).

Some of the requirements for a 1980's oscilloscope were a 15-25 Mhz. Range, Dual Trace, a Time Base Range of 200 nano-seconds to a 1.2 second. Vertical Sensitivity 10 Millivolt per Division or better. Take care.

This scope will do for what you want.

I suppose you know "adrian's digital basement" on youtube he has a ton of C64 repair videos.
