ADC 16 cant communicate

Post by robint »

Hi guys.
Can anyone help me get going with this old product. its got a db9 rs232 Female socket output to my Laptop which has got a comm port only usbs. I naively thought I could just get a cable adapter - WRONG and what a waste of time cos the cable was faulty anyway. I had installed R5 - 25 .3 but it doesnt find the device. USB says I need the driver? Where do I find this?
I ordered a USB/rs232 converter based on the ch340 chip
Can anyone give me guidance as I m not a comms nerd more of a plug and play as we do today. So Im flapping around like a beached whale. It was a good piece of kit in its day and I am loathe to bin it but a brick is a brick

Hi robint,

I can see that you have requested support for this via our Help Desk, and that you are being well supported by one of our Tech Specialists, so I won't interrupt your discussions. However, for the benefit of other users of our products of this type, or other potential users who are looking for real low cost data logging, who may come across this post from a search, I am posting some additional information that I hope will be helpful.

Our ADC-16 and other Data Acquisition devices that used serial ports for communication can be made to work with USB. However, the key to getting the cable working is that your adaptor must be MCT (Magic Control Technology) compatible, which is becoming harder and harder to comply with as time moves on. At the time of writing this, a quick Google search returned some still available converters from standard suppliers, such as this one: https://www.dsshop24.com/en/mct-rch-dgf ... ister.html, and from eBay.
Also, in order to work correctly, they need to use an appropriate driver for MCT, the latest version of which, again at the time of writing, supports Windows 7 to 10, (see option 13 here: https://www.mct.com.tw/download.php?lan ... rentpage=2).

This is only part of the problem though, as you still need to get up and running with picoLog 5, are restricted to the typically inferior capabilities of the Data Logger, and are going to be much more difficult to help when problems arise. So, for these reasons along with the increasing scarcity of the interface hardware this is probably not the way to go moving forward. These days the sheer time and effort alone, to get all of this running on an old system, just isn't worth it, especially when you can buy a really low cost laptop that will run more up-to-date operating systems, and low cost second hand USB data loggers.
Of course we will always do our best to help with all of our products, but wouldn't you rather be spending your time actually using the data loggers, rather than trying to get them up and running and trying to push them beyond what they are capable of doing?
