2206B mains shorted to ground, seems dead

Post by tomikaa87 »

Hi,

A few days ago I wanted to record the discharge curve of a UPS with my 2206B using PicoLog. I've attached the probe to the battery terminals, but at this moment the probe was not connected to the scope. The scope was attached to a desktop computer and the UPS was plugged into mains (I wanted to start the measurement from a fully charged state). I've set up the measurement parameters in PicoLog and the last step was to connect the probe. That was the point where I made a rookie mistake and didn't check if the UPS's battery was not isolated from mains. When the ground ring of the probe's plug touched the scope's connector, it shorted the system and tripped the mains breaker.

Long story short, the scope is now unresponsive. It won't show up in the Device Manager in Windows (or in the list from lsusb in linux/mac). It seems to be drawing a constant 60 mA. I took apart the device to see if there is an obvious damage, but everything looks fine, no burnt components. I've made some measurements, and found that there are no voltage rails, only the 5V USB is present. Also I've found a 680 Ohm resistor on the bottom side which is hot to the touch. One side of it has the 5V from USB, the other side measures around 0.75 V. (See the attached image)

I don't have my hopes up that the issue is fixable, but can you give me any tips where to start if I want to troubleshoot? Since only the ground was involved in the short circuit, neither the USB data/power pins, nor the signal input of the front end, there is a chance that most of the circuit is fine.

Hi tomikaa87,

My advice would be to contact our help desk at support@picotech.com, and send in the Scope for test, by our test and repair team, who will be able to give you an idea of what condition the PicoScope is in and what options are available to you.

Regards,
