Hi,

Could you confirm Picoscope 2206B is capable to pulse an LED light with 20% duty cycle, 40kHz. And further, is it capable to capture fluorescence signal of a PMT and / or photodiode with sampling rate 10MHz for 200 seconds? or can you please advise a suitable unit for this task.

Hi Grommit,

You should have no problem driving an LED from the output of Signal Generator. 40kHz is a period of 20us, which for a duty cycle of 20% will give you a pulse width of 4us. The minimum pulse width in a PS2206B would be 1us (maximum frequency of 1MHz), so pulse width in the Arbitrary Waveform generator wouldn't be a problem. The maximum Sample Rate in the 2206B is 500MS/s so a 10MS/s Sample Rate wouldn't be a problem.

Unfortunately though, the buffer size is only 32MS so the maximum time that you could sample at that rate would be 3.2 seconds. Also, a lot will depend upon the level of the output from Photo-multiplier or photodiode, i.e. if it is a few uV maximum then you will have a problem the dynamic rage, because the minimum step size in the 2206B would be between 160-200uV, and that is without even considering the noise.

So, ideally you need a minimum of a PicoScope with a minimum 200MS buffer memory (i.e. 256MS) such as a PicoScope 4224A, which would also give you a better minimum step size of 10-12uV. With the PicoScope 4224A, you may also need a Differential Instrumentation Amplifier or suitable alternative to amplify the PMT/photodiode output (without adding significant noise) to a suitable level in order to be able to capture the output signal with the amplitude precision that you want.
