2204A Earthing

Post by johnsellars »

Is it possible to run a 2204A not referenced to earth? For example, across a resistor inline with a load to look at the load current? Thank you

Hi john,

If you're not working with potentially dangerous voltages or currents, then yes it is possible. You would have to find a common reference between the representative circuit of the item being measured and the common of the PicoScope, so that you have a return path for the current.

However, this is something that we wouldn't recommend as it creates issues such as accuracy, susceptibility to interference, invalidation of the warranty in the case of a fault, or unforeseen problem, and most importantly potentially dangerous practices if you're not experienced enough to know for sure if potentially hazardous voltages and/or currents could be introduced to the measurement.

In any case, there are better methods to make that measurement with the picoScope, such as using a differential probe, using an instrumentation amplifier with differential inputs, or using an instrument/measurement transformer.

Regards,
