Camshaft Signal Interpretation

Post by hypercartech »

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has a strong understanding of camshaft signals and can help interpret this signal for me.

I have used the picoscope to diagnose cam timing issues for years by looking at the signals and calculating the camshaft offset between each bank of cams. This is a fairly common practice and is explained in one of Pico's How-to's. The issue I'm having is what does it mean when the cam signals have different durations? The cam timing is not being adjusted by the ECM and the cam signals should match but I have come across some that don't.

I have attached 3 example signals.
1. A signal with acceptable offset of 3*
2. A signal with excessive offset of 29*
3. My signal with an acceptable offset at the end of the signal but a noticeable difference in duration of approximately 30*

Thank you
