TC08: Detecting Open and Shorted TC's

Post by liber »

Hi,

We use your USB TC08 with our software (communicating through usbtc08.dll). Can you offer any guidelines on programmatically detecting open and shorted thermocouples?

Thanks,

Sergey Liberman

A thermocouple is a short!
If it is short somewhere else than at the measuring point, it just measure the temperature at the short ( or maybe a temperature between the short and the real measuring point.)

But said that, I also call for a detection of an open thermocouple instead of it just measuring app. ambient temperature with a little more noise than usual.

Hi unfortunately the TC-08 cannot detect open circuits, the TC-08 will measure from the cold junction so as such if your thermocouple is measuring room temperature you might not be able to tell. If you are measuring an oven and your channel is telling you its room temperature then you know you have an open circuit.

Kind regards

But it can (and should) be done by redesigning the hardware.

As a professional in the field of accredited calibration, I have worked with numerous TC thermometers and they can all detect an open TC sensor.

Hi I do agree this would be a great feature to have if we were to create another TC-08. However we have been selling the TC-08 for years and it is one of our best selling products, taking into account the price of the unit and the fact that the software is free there are no immediate plans for any changes.

Kind regards
