2205 USB Disconnecting upon PicoScope 6 start

Post by Mikko Saarisalo »

I have had Pico Scope 2205 for about a year and have been rather satisfied - excellent solution for my occasional use.

I am running the software on an Intel MAC OS X 10.5 - VMWare - Win NT -setup. All fine.

Now after some months of no-usage I needed the scope again, but had no success.

Every time PicoScope 6.4.92 scans for connected scope, the USB connection breaks up. I can observe that happening from WIndows Hardware Manager: upon plugging the scope into an USB port I can see it appearing there - when starting PicoScope I hear an USB disconnect sound and can see the scope getting de-listed from the USB devices list. The same happens when asking PicoScope to refresh the list of available scopes.

I have tried this with XP and Vista as well. I also have uninstalled *all* pico SW and drivers and then done a clean install. Also tried rebooting after a clean install. Systematically the same result.

Any clue?

Hi Mikko,

When you say you have tried XP and Vista is this also running VMWARE?

Kind regards

Yes. Now both, XP and Vista (Windows 7) on the same MacBookPro laptop using VMWare. The very same XP used to do PicoScope fine earlier.

Problem isolated and fixed. It was actually caused by a new USB handling behavior in VMWare Fusion 3.1.2 compared to the earlier version.

My speculation is that the usb connection breaks or is re-established momentarily during PicoSpope's device scan process.

When you connect an usb device VMWare causes a MAC prompt to ask whether you want to connect the USB device to MAC or to Windows. Unless "remember my decision" (or something alike) is ticked as you make the selection, the connection break cases the USB connection to some other state than being connected to Windows.

After ticking the "remember my decision" my 2205 was again properly connected to PicoScope 6 software.
