M$ strikes again

Post by Toad »

Using a PS3204 with Picsocope 6.3.43 and everything was working quite nicely until I used Microsoft Update to install the lastest patches and now the software can't find the hardware. Nothing seems to help, different versions, various maintenance tools used.

I tried the samething on another computer and got the same results.

Anybody got a clue?

I would uninstall the software and try installing the latest software.

If you have already done this, I would check if the device appears in device manager.

I am on my 5th attempt at loading this box from scratch and I can't get the software to find the hardware. Yes the latest version 6.4.48 I believe. Yes it appears in Device Manger everytime before I start the software. And why would I get the same results on a different box. Both of which had it working fine for a long time.

I see the software is only targeted to WinXP service pack 2. Will there be a version for Service Pack 3? Or will the latest version play happily with service pack 3? Can it be on the same box as MS Visual Studio 2005 (including SQL 2005 and all the updates for both)?

If it can't run on service pack 3 do you know what is causing this so I have a clue as what not to do.

I am about to load it with just the bare essentials just to see what happens.

I really like this scope and have been using it for a couple of years, not a problem. Now all of a sudden I have a hard drive go bad, replace it, and no more scope.

Can you tell the frustration is mounting?

Well after about the 4th round of testing out my hardware I take it I have an intermittent problem with my USB hub. Why the one time it couldn't be found on my other box, after the MS updates, I'm not sure. But I've tried a couple more times and it connects just find. And the software has found it, in the original box, now twice today out of about 15 attempts.

But please, Ziko, if you could answer my questions from the last post would be very much appreciated. Oh and I do understand that WinXP service pack 2 is the minimum you need to run the software.

And they wonder why a man drinks!

This is very strange as I have about 5 computers running SP3 working perfectly fine, 2 of these are computers at home and 3 are computers at work. So I don't think it is a an SP3 problem. VS2005 and SQL should be no problem as well. I have Visual studios on some of the computers I use.

Could it be a bad USB cable?

Are you writing your own software to drive the PicoScope?

Kind regards

Not a cable problem, tried two others during the fight. Went out and bought another hub today. No more problems!

Found one that's a powered 4-port with individual power switches on each port. Now everytime I fire up my "confuser" my scope doesn't turn on as well. Neat.

Haven't written any software for the scope. Wish my days had time for that. Strickly a novice at visual studio. But I'm learning and that's what this life is all about... Learning stuff.

Thanks for the help!

Ah well I'm glad that it is working now, so was the other hub an unpowered one?

It was powered too, just not the nifty power switches.

Ziko, do you run any of your scopes through a USB hub?

Thought I could get by with a cheapie hub. Nope! Distorsion and low freq roll off. I just love it when I cause my own problems. D-Link ehh? Any model you prefer?
