Set up for kid's experiment with 2204A

Post by theHeatingEngineer »

I was trying to think of an experiment to demonstrate how a moving magnet induces a current / voltage in a wire. The aim was to move towards building a simple electric motor.

To start with, I hoped to rig up a single rotating magnet moving across a wire and to show the voltage blip on the scope. But when I connected the scope across the wire (12" of single strand 0.5mm copper) I got what I assumed was noise which others seem to have notices as well.

The noise is show here: "Link removed by admin as broken, please attach image"

Then I realised the noise appears with or without the wire connected.

I looked at the various solutions including
Resolution Enhancement
Math Channel low pass filter
Waveform averaging

But then I thought there may be a better way of doing this. How should I be thinking when trying to use a scope for such a deceptively simple experiment?

Hi theHeatingEngineer,

You could look at implementing this experiment: https://www.picotech.com/library/experiment/magnetic-induction-faradays-laws, followed by this one: https://www.picotech.com/library/experiment/dynamo.
