Picoscope software 10MS/s streaming, 4444 capable of 50MS/s

Post by nurber »

Hi Forum. Why is Picoscope software only capable of 10MS/s USB streaming when, for example, 4444 is capable of 50MS/s ?

The SDK can go to 50 or even higher.

I hope someday pico decides to increase this limit for the USB3 type of scopes
Also the max 100MS limit is sometimes on the low side.

Thanks for reply. I'd like to use the mask or persistence to show glitches over time without the need to record data. I'm not sure what sample rate is needed yet, but I noticed this limitation in documentation. Also see that automotive scope is capable of 20MS/s.

Hi nurber and bennog,

Our USB 3.0 products can sample at up to around 20 MS/s with the PicoScope 6.12 software when used with a USB 3.0 connection, and the PicoScope 4444 can sample at up to around 16.67 MS/s.

The reason for the limitation is historically down to preserving PC resources, but as technology moves on this may well be reconsidered. I will notify the Development Team of your comments.

we are almost 2 years later now.

Any progress on increasing the 100MS and 16.6MS/s limit for the 4444.

Running on i9 12 core (24 threads) and 32GB ram the 1.6% CPU usage, so
preserving PC resources
is no excuse.

Maybe a test om at startup a check for CPU and RAM and:
- increase the 100M limit if RAM >= 8GB
- increase max sample rate if CPU Cores >= 4

Hi Benno. Good quantification of the constraint. The lack of response speaks to resource constraints. I too would like this answered as this feels like an unnecessary bottleneck.

I agree. The limit is absurdly low, and having a limit like this is defies normal PC software conventions anyway. If I open too many spreadsheets my computer will eventually run out of memory and crash. But would be my problem.

People have been asking for this for years. It doesn't have to be the default. It can be buried in some menu option with a disclaimer pop-up for all I care. Just let me do what I want! /rant over :)

Coming up on 6 years since the last update to this thread. I'm curious if Picoscope has done anything about this ?
