No light, device not even searched for

I've loaded the software for the TC-08. Upon connecting the device the led on the TC-08 is not illuminated, and my computer does not search for the device as though it is not even there.
I have tried a different cable with the same results. Is this TC-08 dead on arrival?
Any thing I can try? I just received this logger and am supposed to collect data at customer site starting on Tuesday.

I would suggest trying another cable if you haven't already done this, otherwise contact support@picotech.com

yes, a different cable is one of the first things I tried--2 computers and 2 cables.
