PICOSCOPE 2206B and high voltage spark protection

Post by phani »

Hello,
I am planning to purchase PICOSCOPE 2206B for my project. My goal is to measure currents in the range of 1-100 microamps using a shunt of 10K Ohm, which translates to a voltage 0.01 V to 1 V across the shunt. However, there is a chance of high voltage sparks happening due to breakdown, which may shoot the current up to, say, 0.1 amps for a short time, which results in a voltage of 1000V across the shunt (way beyond the safe limit of 100V!).

The solution I thought of is to have a TVS diode (such as this "https://www.ti.com/lit/gpn/tpd4e1b06") (known for fast response in clamping the voltage) in parallel to clamp the voltage to some small value, around 10V. Is this a reliable way to protect the picoscope? I really appreciate any other suggestions you can provide :)

Regards,
Phani.
