Noisy TA189 Current Clamp

Post by DoubleD »

It seems that my TA189 30A Current clamp is very noisy. It is so noisy that it is basically unusable at the +/-100mA setting. The measured peak to peak noise is 248.1mA, and the measured True RMS is 11.06mA with nothing in the clamp. This is after zeroing. The Channel is set to 30A Current Clamp, 20 MHz Bandwidth Limit.

Is this normal or do I have a bad clamp?

Called and talked with Tech Support. They said this is normal. I guess being a 30A clamp, reading 50mA is in the noise floor.

if you do a low pass filter e.g. 1khz the signal is far better.

unless you want to measure low current at higher frequency's.

Then it is smart to use a 10 ohm resistor and measure the voltage drop on the resistor.
