Spikes down to <160dB/Hz when recording noise using Picoscope 5000 series and Si Photodetector

Post by chris.harris »

I'm measuring the noise of my system using a Picoscope 5000 series and a silicon fast photodetector, however, when I process the data taken from Picoscope software I find there are single-point-spikes on my RIN vs frequency plot down to extremely low values (<160dB/Hz) which move around randomly and look like measurement noise. These obviously average out when taking multiple measurements, but I was wondering if anyone knew the cause of these extremely low values? They can't be physical, so must originate from the Picoscope itself, maybe some artifacts from the way it transforms the data? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
