CRT emulation

Post by OomD »

A nice to have feature request - CRT emulation mode for the waveforms. For this it would be nice to have the vertical lines of a trace made a much lighter color, the steeper the line slope is the lighter it should be. This could also help waveforms look better, or less cluttered with noise.

Hi OomD,

Sorry for the long delay in answering. I have been off work for different reasons, and only just caught up with a heavy workload, and backlog of Helpdesk tickets.

The issue with your suggestion is that the lighter section of the screen would either be harder to see or not (depending upon how much lighter you made it). For fast changing noise this would be a good thing, but for slow changing noise, not so good. Fast changing signals would also be affected, which would also be not so good. So, in a nutshell. this may not necessarily discriminate between noise and signal, depending upon the type of noise and type of signal.

Essentially, what you would be doing is filtering out the higher frequencies by making them less visible. We already have ways to do that, i.e. Math Channel Filters, Input Channel Filters, and Bandwidth Limiters. However, we also have Resolution Enhancement (which to some extent resembles a filter in it's action, but has the added advantage of increasing the resolution), and Waveform averaging, which has minimal effect on the signal while reducing the noise.

Regards,
