2204A CAN BUS Decoding is this possible

Post by denton31 »

Have found a few posts from searching but I thought I would ask here to confirm. I have been using my 2204a to spot glitches in sensors on CAT Heavy equipment for a while and I had a situation with one of the CAN BUS lines on a piece of CAT equipment last week. I was trying to serial decode the J1939 CAN BUS to see if one of the modules was throwing a bunch of bad packets or was even missing a ECM. I have been wanting to decode and reverse engineer the multiple ECM's on the equipment for a while so I would know if I was missing one or where the bad packets was coming from.

Anyway my problem is every time I try to decode it states that the sample rate maybe to slow and won't decode or partially decodes with every packet showing errors. Is this something that I just have set up wrong or does the 2204a just not have enough memory to do it. I have seen posts going both ways but most are saying I don't have enough memory. If that is the case would the 2206B be the most economical model that would do what need. I was practicing on my 2020 Chevy pickup and it gave me the same message but the baud rate seems to be 1mbaud on it and I'm not sure if it is CAN or CAN FD(how do I know the difference)?

The CAT equipment I have been hooked up to seems to be running 250baud but still not sure if it is CAN or CAN FD.

I appreciate the help.
Thanks, Denton

Hi Denton,

You would probably get a better recommendation, by posting on our Automotive forum (see here: https://www.picoauto.com/support/), where users will have had more experience with this.
