RIGHT MODEL FOR ETHERNET POWERLINK NETWORK

Post by Mario JRL »

Hi,

Currently we have some problems with a machine which includes a Powerlink network. This is an ethernet 100Base-T based protocol, but the upper layers are designed for deterministic behavior and fixed latency, avoid collisions etc. The Master (Managging node) send a sync telegram every network cycle (every 2-5ms), and the slaves answer with his data in its time slot. We need to "look" at the waveform when an error occurs, since at this time we have data analyzers (wireshark), but the obtained information by this way is not enough for an accurate diagnostic. Also, we need to trigger (stop) the capturing when the error happens, because the amount of data per second is huge. Currently we have a 24v signal who goes OFF when the powerlink master (Managging node) detecs the error.

We have detected with wireshark who very often, some slaves doesn't talk in its time slot. Is should be because some slaves can't "hear" the previous Master Sync telegram.
So I think I need to take a look for the signal quality, but also inspect an arbitrary packet in order to see it is within the EPL/100 Base T standard levels.

At this time, we are not sure about if the problem is a RFI issue, a potential DC power shift related to a sporadic isolation leakage, or a failure on a slave who causes collissions, among others.

This EPL network is four wire, like 100 baseT, the lower layers are 100 baseT indeed. Which type of probes should I use?

One more thing (I'm sorry :| ) The scope will be mounted on the machine's rotating ring, and there only 24Vdc or less are available, using DC-DC converters. (or May be we can mount an inverter to get 23vac)

Thanks,

Mario Recio.

Hi Mario,

I apologise for the long delay in answering, I have been tied up with other work, so I haven't been able to answer forum posts for quite a while.

If you still need to resolve this, then I would suggest sending an email to our Help Desk at support@picotech.com and mark it for the attention of our RF team, as they will need to discuss the use of PicoScopes capable of performing signal integrity checking on 100Base-T.

Regards,
