2205A Noise Floor in Scope View

Post by Michael_Faraday »

The noise floor is in range according to the specs, but I am wondering what these spikes are caused by. Do they actually exist or are they phantom? They occur randomly yet regularly.

Both channels have 50 ohm terminators connected and nothing else. I managed to get a beautiful waveform of AC noise on a SMPS, and the scope and software appear to be functioning properly otherwise.

Hi Michael,

I apologise for the long delay in answering, I have been tied up with other work, so I haven't been able to answer forum posts for quite a while.

The spikes are just random components of larger noise voltages, (they look large because you have zoomed in to a noise waveform on the smallest input range). Noise is a randomized voltage, so what would be more unusual is if there were no spikes and the noise looked exactly the same from the beginning to the end of the capture.
