Install Picoscope 6.14 in a Single Board Computer (SBC)

Post by johnbacas »

Has anyone installed Picoscope software (6.14) in a Single Board Computer (eg Raspberry Pi or Rock Pi X or else)?

I'm a teacher in a Vocational High School. I have bought Picoscope 2204a (osc + gen) to use it in my Electronics Laboratory. I need to combine it with a cheap solution of PC to use it for my experiments so I won't have to "sacrifice" other expensive PCs from my Informatics Laboratory.

Is there any solution available ?

Hi John,

You would struggle to get much of PicoScope 6 working in a Pi. PicoLog 6 will work, as it doesn't have the same real-time demands, and you can run the driver with your own API, developed using our SDK (there are some topics on the forum regarding necessary tweaks, e.g. topic40002.html?&p=144754&hilit=picosco ... pi#p144754).

If it is just to run PicoScope 6 (not to demonstrate or learn the SBC platform), I would suggest looking at a second hand quality build PC/laptop. As an example (not as an endorsement) I picked up a refurbed Lenovo Toughbook about 3 or 4 years back, For just over £100, which is still working (with PicoScopes attached), and I have a couple of friends who've been relying on them faultlessly for considerably longer.

I really need to do it with an SBC that could be used for other projects too.
Rock Pi X runs Windows and has an Intel quad core processor.
Is it a matter of proccessor that could cause a Pi to "struggle" with PicoScope? Or it has to do with other parameters too, eg drivers ?

Hi John,

It tends to be the processor that is the issue, as there isn't enough horsepower to process the incoming data, update the display, etc.

I can confirm Picoscope 6.14 runs with no problems on the Rock Pi X B4E32 under windows 10.
It is also accesible through remote desktop even in full screen.

Power requirements for using a Picoscope with a Rock PiX SBC.

Have a look at the Radxa web regarding powering the Pi X, this is what they say:
"Power supply
The ROCK Pi X is powered by USB Type C port and supports a wide range of input voltage, from 9V to 20V. The power adapter can be USB Type-C PD 2.0 with 9V/2A, 12V/2A, 15V/2A and 20V/2A protocol compatible, or Quick Charge 2.0 9V/2A, 12V/2A compatible. A dummy 9V or 12V power adapter with USB C tail will also work. Warning: 9V/12V USB C dummy power adapter is dangerous to other 5V only devices, don't mix them.
If the power adapter is PD/QC compatible, the USB power cable must support USB data communication(USB 2.0 or 3.0) between the board and the power adapter, or the power adapter will not output desired voltage wanted by the board.
Note: We don't suggest using a 5V only USB C power adapter. The board may boot but it will cause stability issue once the system load rises."

My setup is working with a Qualcom 12V capable usb C charger. Already tried with a 5V 3A quick charger and the Pi X shuts down after pluging the picoscope to it.

I will report if I find more issues.

Hi John,

Sorry, I quickly read your comment of the Rock Pi, where you were referring to it as "the Pi". Didn't realize that it's more of a PC than a Pi, (doesn't run on an Arm core, runs on an Intel Atom x5-Z8350 Quad-Core X86).

Running SBC's that are effectively Single Board PC's should have no problem running PicoScope 6.
