Trigger on Gb Ethernet signal with PicoScope 9302-15

Post by mmercier »

Hi,

I bought a PicoScope 9302-15 to measure eye diagrams and qualify signal integrity of various signals on a carrier board. I have to measure signal integrity and eye diagrams of USB 2, USB3, SATA 2, PCIe gen2, HDMI 1.4b and Gigabit Ethernet.

So far, I could measure the signal integrity and get the eye diagram of the TMDS signals from HDMI. I used a PicoConnect probe with AC coupling and /5 attenuation to measure the signal. I fed the probe signal to the splitter box and connected the outputs of the splitter box to the clock recovery input and the Input 1. I connected the other polarity of the differential pair to the other input after I figure the skew between both probe by connecting to the same signal. So far so good, I could get the eye diagram just fine and I'm pleased with the product.

After performing measurements with HDMI, I tried to measure signal integrity of Gigabit Ethernet with the same setup, but I could only get junk on the screen (screen filling randomly with no discernible pattern), because it appears the scope cannot trigger on the signal for some reason. I tried to use the trigger inputs, direct channel 1, whatever. The software has the eye diagram masks for GbE, so I suppose that it should be able to measure those signal. I know by GbE signal is a bit shaky on that board, because it disconnects some times, but I can still successfully transfer 900Mbps+ using iperf software for like 5 minutes, so while the signal integrity may not be perfect, it shouldn't be that bad either.

I'm pretty sure I will be able to the the device to debug the other protocols just fine, so I'm wondering if it is the PAM-5 signaling that is wreaking havoc with the clock recovery/trigger? I think I need some insight about how to get that oscilloscope to measure my GbE signal.

Is there some material about how to use PicoSample software? Honestly, it isn't all that easy to use and the manual is next to useless (not enough details). While I'm pretty sure I understand how it works under the hood, I feel the controls on the GUI are hard to grasp. There are lots of "delays" scattered all over the place and they don't even have a name just a box with time value... Maybe there is just a little detail I haven't figured.

Best regards

Martyn
