USB3 Bandwidth -- Streaming Mode

Post by alowell »

Hello,

I was curious about the upper limit on the data rate in streaming mode. I'm mostly familiar with 3000D and 5000D models. The spec is 125 MS/s total across all channels in 8 bit mode. I've found that on my system, I can get 150 MS/s. I'm curious about why it can't go faster than this. I'm not sure exactly what hardware is inside the scope, but I'm guessing either Cypress EZ-USB FX3 or FTDI FT601, which have both been demonstrated to exceed 360 MByte/s, which would correspond to 360 MS/s for 8 bit samples assuming no packet overhead. Are there any prospects (or hacks) to get the streaming mode data rate up?

Thanks :)

Hi alowell,

Apologies for the delay in answering. Coronavirus has had its toll on our ability to respond to posts on the forum.

Technically the maximum rate that you could transfer 8-bit data from a PicoScope over the USB 3 bus would be 250MS/s, however in practice this couldn't be done reliably (without losing data). So the limit has been set at 125MS/s.
