Two question about Picoscope 2204A

Post by hobby2020 »

I am afraid if I use a PC oscilloscope, I might make a mistake and damage my laptop.
Are there safety mechanisms in Picoscope 2204A that protect my laptop?
The Picoscope 2204A is a entry level oscilloscope with a reasonable price for me. I was wondering if in the near future there will be a newer entry level model in the near future. Will there be a newer entry level Picoscope?

Hi hobby2020,

What makes you think that connecting a PC Scope to your laptop will damage it?

As far as I am aware, there is no newer entry level PicoScope planned for the near future, but, again, why do you ask?

I am not knowledgeable in this area so I might be wrong, for example, if I probe a voltage which is out of range for the oscilloscope could it damage the laptop too?

I was also wondering if it is worth to wait to buy a newer entry level oscilloscope. Think of entry level cameras for which every now and then there is a newer model.

Hi

The 2204A has overvoltage protection up to +- 100 V so if the voltage is within this range even if it is outside of the +-20 V input range then no damage will occur to the scope or the attached PC. If you are going to be looking at signals with amplitude greater than +-100 V then we would strongly recommend using a differential probe to protect the scope, PC and user especially if you are looking at mains level voltages which need appropriately CAT rated probes.

I have no information about a replacement for the 2204A.
