ps4824 different timebase/downsampling for each channel

Post by agry » Wed Oct 02, 2019 10:08 am

Hi,
Thank you for letting me join this forum.

I have a PicoScope 4824 with 8 channels that I will use for sampling data from 8 different sensors (I understand that this might not be what the device is designed for). I'm writing my own application using your API.

The problem is that all the sensors have different signal characteristics and the sampling rate would ideally be different for each channel (10khz to 5Mhz).

Is there any way I can set up the scope to sample at a different timebase or transmit data with different downsampling rate for each channel?

Hi agry,

Unfortunately, our PicoScopes only have one sample clock and clock divider for all channels, so you would have to just use the fastest sample rate required by any one of your sensors as the sample rate for all of them. It would mean that you would have less available buffer memory for sampling, but the over-sampled channels should still give you the information that you need.

Thank you Garry,

You are absolutely right about the over-sampled channels. My issue is that it leaves me implementing the scope's hardware functionality in software, which might make the system too slow.

Does all PicoScopes have one sample clock and divider for all channels? Do you have a suggestion for how I can handle 8 different sensors without too much over-sampling? I'm considering getting 4 scopes with 2 channels each.

Regards,
Andreas

Hi Andreas,

Sorry for the delay in answering (I meant to get back to this as there were changes being implemented in our tools, but it slipped through the net :-( )

If the sample rates that you need are not faster than 1kHz then you can use PicoLog 6 to give you different sample rates on the channels.
