USB 1.1 Signal Integrity

Post by pkamgar »

We like to probe the Signal integrity at the end of our product USB cable to compare it with when it is connected to an extension cable. We like to see if the signal is distorted, what product is suggested for this application? our device is a USB 1.1 Device.

Hi pkamgar,

Typically, over longer cable lengths you will see a rounding off of the corners on the bit-stream waveform of USB 1.1. There may also be more distortion due to more pickup of Electromagnetic Interference, and more noise.

To view the distortion, the product that you will need depends upon (a) to what precision you want to be able to compare the correct waveform to the distorted waveform (e.g. do you want to just be able to detect the difference, or do you want to measure it to a specific percentage difference), and (b) what the length of the extension cable is (shorter cables will give you less rounding off of the corners, which may require a faster Rise Time PicoScope to be able to display the difference between the waveforms).

So, I guess the question I really need to ask you is, could you tell us if you want to do the comparison out of curiosity, or is there a specific reason why you need to know what the distortion is?

Regards,
