Ion selective electrodes DrDaq

Post by Pimentel »

Hello everybody,
I would like to use a ion selective electrode Kwikcal-2 to measure the Ca composition variations in the DrDaq datalogger. This electrode requires the use of the BNC pH port and to measure in mV. Furthermore, it requires a reference electrode (Dri-ref-450) to be connected on the datalogger. The reference electrode has a 2 mm pin.
Should I connect the reference electrode on the ground pin connector? Is it possible to measure with this electrodes using the DrDaq datalogger?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Pimentel

As you would be replacing our pH sensor, which has the reference and measurement electrode in the same enclosure, I would say that the way to connect up the two independent sensors would be to have reference electrode pin connected to ground at the pH sensor input of the DrDaq, and the measurement electrode pin connected to the signal at the DrDaq input. In theory it is possible to take a measurement this way, after having set up the response of the system (i.e. after having calibrated it) using known pH solutions, and having set up the measurement with an appropriate temperature measurement sensor (as long as the output voltage range from the difference between your 2 sensors is within the full-scale input range of the DrDaq input).

However, setting up the temperature sensor is key to getting accuracy out of your measurement, so depending upon the accuracy you need you may also find this post useful: topic27111.html.

Hi Gerry,
thank you so much for your reply. I will try to follow your comments, using also the temperature sensors. Let's see...

Dear PicoTech Team,

I am also interested in using ion selective electrodes with Dr. Daq. Temeprature and pH measurements went perfectly and therefore I want to use it for measurement of ion concentrations. If that works, we would buy multiple Dr. Daq for for multiple measurements of different ions. If you could explain maybe more in detail how to connect the ion selective electrodes with Dr. Daq, that would be great. i am looking forward for your answer.

Best regards
Stephanos

Hi Stephanos,

Sorry for the late response.

We can certainly help you with the data acquisition side of your measurement application. However, aside from my previous answer I have no more expertise on ion selective electrode setup with more than one electrode (our expertise is in using sensors with the DrDaq data logger, for which it was designed). I would suggest that you are likely to get more in-depth information (that can help with your setup) from the manufacturers of the electrodes.
