8 bits vs 12 bits

I am interested in the ADC-40 which works on a 5 volt signal with 8 bit resolution. What isn't clear to me is if I choose a smaller signal range, say 20 millivolts, do I get 8 bit resolution over 20 millivolts or over 5 volts?

Second question: is the software the same for all scopes? I wanted to download a demo version, but it wasn't clear that I would be seeing what I would ultimately use. The question of interest was: can I choose ranges, time bases etc. Time bases I assume will run from 500 usec up to infinity, but this would clearly be dependent upon the scope. Thus the question of the software isn't clear.

Hello,

THe ADC40 has one range Â±5v. So you will need to divide 8bits across a 10v peak to peak range = 39mV steps.

The software is the same for all of our scopes. The software will detect the scope attached and use the timebases and voltage ranges available for that scope.
