Picoscope 6.11.8.10 for linux

Post by naftilos76 » Sat Jan 23, 2016 9:36 am

Hi everyone, i have just entered the picotech family! I bought a 3206 MSO 200MHz and i tried the latest linux drivers (beta) on a laptop Z70-80 i7-5500 RAM 16GB HD SSD 120GB Display 1920*1080 under Linux Mint 17.3 64bit. I started enjoying it until, at random intervals, the software shutdown without any error messages or warnings. There was no way to reproduce the problem. Sometimes picoscope was running for a few minutes, sometimes for half an hour or more. I tried to find what was causing this unexpected shutdown but without any luck. I tried the windows version in a windows 10 virtualbox guest. While the installation completed successfully without the slightest error, i could not make picoscope work. After a few seconds i got a small dialog saying "ckeck usb" and a waiting bar like those in websites showing a bar that is going from left to right and so on. That was with the virtualbox usb settings set to USB 2.0. I tried setting the usb settings to USB 3.0 and the dialog saying "ckeck usb" did not appear but picoscope was litteraly unusable. Everything was barely accessible, then stuck for a sec or two, then accessible, then stuck again and so on. The waveform was updated extremely slowly and in general everything was inoperable. I then tried the window version of picoscope in a quad core intel atom tablet i recently bought (http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_228492.html) and it was all a success. Nothing went wrong and the tablet surprised me in a good way and so did the picoscope s/w even if the power to the 3206 MSO was all coming from the tablet which fortunately has a 8000mA battery.

Guys from picotech, please spend some more time trying to make the linux version a little bit more stable and integrate 100% of the windows picoscope version functionality.

Having said that the 3206 MSO 200MHz is a great product.

Here is what i got when running picoscope directly from a terminal by typing "picoscope". The following messages stop at a point where picoscope shuts down unexpectidly:

Hi naftilos76,

Good to hear you have a PicoScope product! :D

Are you using a PicoScope 3206D MSO as opposed to a PicoScope 3206 MSO?

On the laptop where you are experiencing issues, are you using a USB 3.0 cable or USB 2.0 cable with USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 ports?

Which version of Mono are you using on the Linux Mint install?

It would be helpful to provide a trace.xml file relating to a session where you experience the sudden shutdown. You can find this file in the following location:

~/.local/share/Pico\ Technology/260a68f1-30f-0a5e01d65514

The software is currently a Beta release as it has not achieved full feature parity with the Windows version. The aim is to provide the same level of functionality, with the most recent updates (6.11) featuring improved Serial Decoding functionality.

Hi there,

I have recently bought a 3206 MSO with a USB 2.0 cable (not the new D series). You can confirm the exact model by clicking on the link below.

http://export.farnell.com/pico-technolo ... dp/2279945

I was experimenting with different kernels and noticed that kernel 4.2 was the one being used while encountering the random shutdowns of the picoscope s/w. I switched to a 3.19 kernel and never again noticed any shutdowns like the ones decribed in my initial post. I have not run the s/w under kernel 3.19 for longer than 30-45 mins but i guess that is a safe duration margin for me to assume that the picoscope s/w will most likely be running for much longer.

The mint version i am using is the latest 17.3. Mono version is 3.2.8 (much later than required).

I have used both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports on my laptop and i noticed no difference.

The trace.xml is currently not containing any errors as i noticed because it is the one generated under kernel 3.19 where i can experience no problems. I will try again kernel 4.2 and will provide the file trace.xml later on.

This is probably a kernel-related issue.

Regards
Manos

Hi Hitesh ,

Thank you for replying !
I wasn't doing anything special, no decoding, no FFT, sometimes measurements and cursors, but it crashes without this...
I made another test : no cursors and no measurements, here is the log (./local/...)

Hi Colonel,

Were you attempting to save the data to a file when the crash occurred?

Could you save your settings prior to the crash if it is repeatable (click File -> Save As... and change the save as type to 'Settings files (*.pssettings)' and post them here please?

Thanks,
Hitesh

Hi Hitesh,

I uninstalled the 6.11.6 version and installed the latest (as before), the 6.11.8.10.
It looks like it's crashing less ... i can't understand !
I'm wondering if there is an effect with others applications i'm running in parallel.

The settings are attached in the message.

After the crash, i restarted the picoscope. At the first restart, i stopped the acquisition and noticed that the process called "mono" starts consuming all the CPU ! every eight cores are full.
I closed (the GUI is responding and is not frozen) and in the next restart everything is ok again.

Hi Colonel,

Thanks for posting your settings file.

Unfortunately, I've not been able to reproduce the issue but I have already submitted a bug report to our Development Team using the previous trace file showing the crash as they might be able to determine the cause.

If you are able to determine the exact steps to reproduce this please post back here.

Hitesh

The latest version doesn't find my 3206 when I run picoscope under Ubuntu 14.04, but the 'usbtest' app says I should be able to access it. The error seems to be that it hits: "IsMV Failed" while attempting to load every device library. Yes, I am using a USB 3 cable :). I'm guessing this is something to do with mono? Are there any workarounds for this issue?

My trace file contains:

Hi shfr,

Try reverting to an older version of Mono.
