TC-08 - Onscreen drift with no Thermocouple inserted

Post by Steve123 »

Hi all,

Hopefully a quick question.

I'm monitoring the temperature throughout a device, using type K thermocouples. I'm heating it and then allowing it to return to room temperature. The idea is the device is heated "uniformly" - the reported temperature of all thermocouples is similar at any time.

When I remove a thermocouple from its port, the TC-08 initially reports room temperature (eg 22C) for this port (as do all thermocouples before heating the device). On heating to the maximum temp for the device (eg 50C), the TC-08 reports an elevated temperature reading for the port with the removed thermocouple (eg 30C). On cooling, all reported temperatures return to room temperature. Note that on heating the device the room remains at 22C constantly.

My question is what is dictating this reported temperature of 30C for the disconnected thermocouple?

Thanks for any insight,

With no thermocouple inserted you will read the internal temperature, cold junction, of the TC08.
