Sound analysis

Post by PhiRho40 »

I would like to analyse the sound of a drum under different tuning conditions. I think I can do this with an ADC 100 or 212 and the software provided, but I am not sure about microphones. Could you please advise me on the spec for a suitable microphone. Can I plug it directly into the logger or does irt need some conditioning?

Hi

Thank you for your post.

I would recommend the ADC-216 over the other units as this has a higher resolution, however the others will suffice fine.

With regards a microphone I have no specific specs that I can give you although I would recommend using a dynamic microphone as drum sounds are often too loud and have too great an attack for sensitive microphones such as capacitor microphones.

You should avoid phantom powered microphones unless then can be supplied with a battery as the scope gives no ouput to power anything. Any conditioning needed will depend on the output of the microphone, however it is possible to directly link some mic to the scope with just a jack-to-BNC adaptor.

Hope this helps

Best Regards
