2207 vs. 3205B

Post by Lucifer »

Hi

I currently have a Tektronix TDS220 (100MHz 1GS/s) and a Digimess FG100 Function Generator (0.5Hz – 20MHz).
My FG100 has gone pop (no fault of mine!) and so I was thinking of replacing it with a new unit with more capabilities.

These tools are for my own hobby activities but I do work at a College and all our departments are favouring the PicoScope over conventional scopes. It’s not hard to see why with the capabilities of these little units.

For the cost of a function generator with AWG I can get a PicoScope that will replace both my TDS220 and FG100 and add AWG with PC connectivity and all in one unit.

So the options really are a no brainer, a PicoScope it will be, however...

I have come to the conclusion after lots of reading that the 2207 or 3205B is the closest unit for replacing my kit and within price range.
The 3205B with 2x 150MHz probes is listed at £699.00.
The 2207 with 2x 150MHz probes is listed at £499.00.

I know it's probably going to be a stupid answer as I've probably missed something in the spec. sheets.
What I need to know is what justifies the extra £200.00 for the 3205B over the 2207?

Thanks.

There are two many differences in the specifications between the devices :-
  • The 2207 only has a 32kS memory whereas the 3205B has a 32MS memory.
  • The 2207 can however sample at twice the speed of the 3205B, 1GS/s compared to 500MS/s.
Therefore the choice of scope will depend upon the characteristics of the signals you are looking at, whether you need to use block mode of operation to analyse faster signals, or whether the signals can be streamed directly to the PC at around 10MS/s depending upon the PC's capabilities.
