I had the same problem with an unrecognized scope, and installing Mono 3 worked for me.

For anyone else coming here: the new version of the PicoScope app can detect the Homebrew Mono installation. However, Homebrew Mono doesn't come with Gtk-Sharp, which PicoScope uses for its GUI. I recommend for now using the official Mono installer rather than the Homebrew formula.
