What's the right scope to debug unknown RS232 and RS485?

Post by wkearney99 »

I have applications where I need to debug the serial signals being sent over RS232 and RS485. There's no documentation available on the protocols being used, so I'm going in blind. There's the potential that some of it might be up to 230kbps, but it's more likely 9600 to 31.25k. I've no idea what bit count, parity or spacing might be involved. The equipment functions, obviously, and there are actions I can trigger to provide consistent samples.

Which of the scopes should I consider for this process? I'm willing to spend more provided it's worthwhile. I'm unclear on how the different amounts of bandwidth and memory would apply to this particular kind of task. I'd be connected to a Windows 7x64 desktop with an 2gHz I5 and 16gb of memory.

Which scope? And why not one lower than that?

I believe you have received a full answer through email, so just commenting here for others to see.

The entry level 2204a would be suitable for your requirements. Going up to the 3000 series would allow you to work with faster serial buses in the future.
