What is the difference between a data logger and a scope?

Post by richiechen »

Hi Pico,

Firstly, I love picoscopes :) I have been using them for four years and have tried three different models in my Lab.

Now we have started a company and about to buy a scope or a data logger. Could I ask for the differences between a data logger and a scope? Is it all about the "real-time"?

As we have really limited money, we need your advices.

Thanks alot!

There are similarities which is why the 2204a/2205a Scopes can be used as loggers and the
1012/1216 Loggers can be used as scopes.

From our perspective :-
The scopes are generally faster, have less channels, variable input ranges but less vertical resolution.
The loggers are slower, have more channels, have a fixed input range but have greater vertical resolution.
Logging software is generally geared towards storage and post analysis, and scope software is geared more towards real time use.

It really depends upon what you want to do, as to what device is best suited for the purpose.
