Will 12 bits suffice for audio distortion testing?---Post 2

Post by Ben »

Assuming the minimum thd and im will never go below .01% for tube gear.
Also, wouldn't a 333 kilocycle/second sampling frequency generate significant
spurious distortion harmonics if using a 20 or 30 kilohertz test tone. At that frequency, it would only have 10 to 15 samples to recreate the input sine wave it must then analyze wih FFT. So wouldn't a 12 bit 100 ms/s do better for audio?

Hi

Thank you for your post.

I would say that in the majority of cases the 16-bit ADC-216 is best for audio analysis due to it's high resolution. The limit of human hearing is said to be at around 20kHz and thus at this frequency you would still have a good number of points per cycle.

If you are looking at frequencies above this then you might decide that you want a higher sampling rate, in which case you could use the 12-bit scopes, however in most cases the 16-bit resolution is the best option.

Hope this helps

Best Regards
