FFT spectra

Post by marinfr »

I have just purchased a PicoScope4262 and I’m particularly interested in spectra. I have the following questions.
1) PicoScope 6 uses an internal processor of PicoScope, or the PC resources? Therefore, it can be faster than a softwere on the PC working online on the acquired data (or offline on the stored data)?
2) PicoScope 6 can show an average spectrum, in Log scale. Does it perform an average of power spectra on different acquisitions, and then the Log of the average, or the average of the Log of power spectra?
3) It seems that the spectral average performed by PicoScope 6 is limited by the 16M buffer. Is it possible to overcome this limit (I’m interested on the average over a large number of spectra, to increase the accuracy)?
4) As an alternative to Question 3, I could acquire several spectra (I need some hundreds, to get a 1 per cent accuracy) and then average them offline. Is it possible to do that (i.e., acquiring a long series of spectra without using the file acquiring procedure for each one)?
Thanks

Hi there,

Thank you for your inquiry with regard to the FFT functionality in PicoScope 6.

1) The spectrum feature is a software feature ( post processing) and therefore calculated in the application on the PC.

2) In order to assist you further do you mean the average in spectrum measurements or do you mean the average in feature in display mode (under spectrum options).

3) The maximum memory on the device is 16 M samples.

Please could you provide more detail on your application in terms of frequency range and all other information regarding your setup and I will endeavour to assist you further. Please email support@picotech.com

Kindest regards,

Hi Stuart,

There is very less information available on how I can find an FFT for the real time data of voltage and current from the mains.
I have tried to go over your examples but FFT specific function is not mentioned. Is there any way to do it ? Is there document where i can find its subroutine and implementation instructions?

Thanks !

Are you trying to use the spectrum button in Picoscope 6 to show the FFT, or are you looking to write your own FFT analysis routines in software ?
