Thermocouple hot junction

Post by mat »

I am measuring the temperature of a cast iron component. The thermocouple wires are resistance welded to the cast iron. The wires are not touching and there is ~2 mm gap between the wires.

Must the thermocouple wires be touching where the wires are welded to the cast iron? Or, is it acceptable to have a small gap between the wires as described above?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thermocouple junctions work fine even when joined via a third metal (e.g. solder) - they don't have to be twisted together. The only unwanted effect might be if there is a significant temperature difference across the third metal, which sounds unlikely in your case.
