Linux drvier for PicoScope 3206A/B ?

Post by convertl »

Hello,

I need for an application to be able to command and aquire data from an USB oscilloscope under linux (to perform automatic processing of aquisitions).
I have seen that there is a linux driver for the PicoScope 3206, but it is not indicated for PicoScope 3206A and 3206B.
Do the linux driver for the PicoScope 3206 work with the 3206A/B ones ?

Is there effectively a possibility to perform automatic aquisition under linux and be able to take the data into a custom programmed processing tool ?

Thanks for your answer.

The new 3000 series scopes are not software compatible with the old versions.

We don't have any Linux drivers for the new 3000 series at this time, but we are now working on Linux development for all of our new products.

There is no release date for these drivers at this time.

Hi well as I mentioned before we will be working on one, what I would suggest is to sign up to the newsletter and when it comes out you would be alerted.

We do understand that Linux is used a lot and we are working on improving our Linux support. :D

Kind regards

Does the same apply to the PicoScope 3205B, which will not work with the 3205 linux driver?

Yes they would use exactly the same driver.

We have a couple of 3000/B pico scopes at our company and I really like the hardware but I'm very disappointed in the linux support.

I understand you have other priorities, but what I don't understand is why you don't involve the linux community. There are loads of linux folks (myself included) who would be happy to help develop an open source linux driver. Surely it would be possible to release what you have and help support a "community" driver?

From what I understand you are primarily a hardware manufacturer, if open sourcing your software (especially critical bits like drivers) allows you to sell more hardware, what is the argument against that?

Anyway, looking forward to support for my devices in future, hopefully?

We now have Linux drivers for all the current range of scopes. These can be downloaded from our website http://www.picotech.com/software.html by selecting the appropriate product.

Is there any movement on the 64bit drivers? Or any work looking into why neither the linux drivers (32bit) nor the Windows drivers work on virtual machines running on VirtualBox

Both of these issues are stopping me developing applications for my 'scope, and stopping me investing in more equipment. I'd be interested in helping get the drivers sorted if there's a resourcing problem at PicoTech.

I am not sure why the drivers don't work with VirtualBox, I have successfully used them with VMware, which would suggest that they are not happy with the VirtualBox USB implementation.

64bit drivers are not on the current development plan but I am continuing to raise it as something that will need doing sooner rather than later. You are welcome to apply for a development role with u, the details on how to apply can be found here http://pico.jobs/

I'm having one of my occasional re-visits to the picoscope/linux thing as I still want to get this working properly under linux. The drivers/sample code (PS3000Acon) seg-faults under Ubuntu/Kubuntu 12.04 & 12.10. Anyone else experiencing this? Stock code straight out of the tgz file, the "usbtest" runs fine, no permissions problems and the 'scope even seems to initialise correctly too.

Is there a plan for a maintenance release to fix this bug? It's kind of a show stopper. I understand that the drivers were made to run under an older Ubuntu release, but the majority of users will be automatically upgrading every 6 months. I really don't want to have to have a VM setup to run an older version of Ubuntu just for the PicoScope, that's almost as bad as having to have a VM setup for Windows just to use it. (Oh, wait, yes - that's what I have to do anyway)

I have tested this and have seen a segmentation fault on my 12.04 VM. In the absence of a dedicated Linux engineer, we are still trying to recruit someone for this role, I will take a look to see if I can sort it out.

Hi Martyn,

Thanks to trying to look into the problem. I guess Linux support is pretty much stalled until you manage to fill the role. I'd look into it on a consultancy basis as I suggested previously, but I'm not interested in a permanent position.

Merry Christmas

I have been given the nod, and source code access, to do a bit more Linux work :D, now just need more time in the day.

So watch this space in the new year.

With respect to jobs it is someone with experience of GTK we are looking for, small  project to get Picoscope 6 working on Linux, but only permanent roles.
