Does PicoScope 6 still support 3224 scopes?

Post by Chris W »

Hi,

I am using a 3224 scope since many years without any problems. However, since I updated to PicoScope 6 version 6.6.23.2, I now have a couple of problems which basically render the scope useless:

1.) While running, PicoScope suddenly swaps channels A and B. This happens "at will", without changing any settings etc, it will just swap the channels while it is running. I attach 2 sample files, the only "action" taken between the 2 screen-shots was to re-trigger a couple of times in single trigger mode. FYI, the same will happen if I run in auto trigger mode etc.

2.) While running, PicoScope suddenly crashes without any user interaction, just while taking continuous measurements. Once restarted, it will not recognise the still connected scope, unplugging and reconnecting the scope doesn't help either. The only way to get it running again is to either reboot or to logout and login again. This is the reason why I feel like it is a problem with the PicoScope software or drivers rather than with the scope itself, as I can leave it connected during the logout / login process and afterwards the software will recognise it without any problems.

3.) When I go to the "About" screen, it shows the following information:

PicoScope® 6 - PC Oscilloscope software version: 6.6.23.2
Copyright © 1995-2012, Pico Technology Ltd
Model: PicoScope 3224
Serial Number: QDR95/1
USB Version: 2.0
Calibration Date: Sunday, 07 October, 2018
Hardware Version: 7
Driver Version: 3.6.4.114

Calibration Date 2018???

It would be interesting to know whether other owners of this scope are facing the same problems like me. I didn't had the time yet to try an old version of PicoScope to verify the above assumption (unfortunately I deleted all the past versions), but will do that ASAP. Perhaps you can let me know which is the last version still tested with the 3224 scopes, just in case the newest versions are not tested with that scope any more. Btw, I am running Windows 7 professional 64 bit SP1.

Any advise is appreciated.

Hi Chris,

The 3224 is still supported, I tried to recreate the test on 2 computers, one Wind 7 32 bit and one Win7 64bit, using 6.6.23.2 I also tried 6.6.28.1, using your settings.

How often do you get this? Is it easily repeatable?

There are a couple of newer versions of the software:

6.6.28.1
and
6.6.37 and on the beta link:

6.7.2
http://labs.picotech.com/#psw6

In terms of the calibration date, this is strange, we may need to have a look at the unit. Have you tried it on any other machines?

Hi Ziko,

Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, the problem is easily repeatable, swapping of the channels occurs every couple of minutes, maybe in the range of 1 - 3 minutes, while a crash occurs maybe every 10 - 15 minutes in average, that's the reason why I can hardly use it right now. I guess you already noticed that it doesn't only affect the colours of the traces, but also the range, measurements etc. Btw, once the channel swapping occurs I can easily revert to a "normal display" by saving the current settings as start-up settings, close PicoScope and just restart it, without disconnecting the scope from the USB port. Of course that doesn't work in case of a crash.

I didn't had the chance yet to try it on another box, but so far my USB ports never caused a problem with any other device I am using (even though the scope is connected to a USB-3.0 port, I also use them with a couple of other USB-2.0 devices). Memory and CPU power shouldn't be a problem, my notebook is using an i7-2720QM with 8.0 GB of RAM.

As suggested by you, I will download a newer version of PicoScope and give it a try, even so I am afraid it won't make a difference as it doesn't seem to be a known bug or alike. I also took some random crash-logs in between, perhaps you can give me an email address so I can send them to you for further analysis.

One last note, over the last years I occasionally had crashes with the scope before, mainly when using long time scales in the range of 500 ms / division and above and at the same time changing the sampling rate, but I never had the problem that PicoScope swapped channels at random.

Thanks and looking forward to your reply.

Regards

Chris

Please send the crash reports to support@picotech.com , this sounds a very unusual problem.

Hi,

How was this problem solved? I am currently having the same issue with the same software.

Thanks,

Hi Sarah,

Please ensure that you are using the latest version of the PicoScope 6 or PicoScope 6 Beta software (available to download from here).

if the device is still not recognised, please send in the trace.xml file (see section 3 of the PicoScope 6 Self-Help Guide) to support@picotech.com
