general question

Post by campbell »

Hi, I'm new to all this - so please excuse my ignorance

- Do I need a separate multimeter, or will a PC scope cover all normal functions?
- Do I need a separate signal generator?
- What model would you recommend for a newbie? I don't want to have to upgrade anytime soon.
- I need a scope to examine the response of a sensor. Presumably I set a trigger level that ignores noise in the circuit and fires the scope when the sensing starts. Is there any way I can get the trigger action out of the scope to fire an external device like a flash gun?

Thanks in advance, Pip

Hi Pip,

You have perfectly valid questions. In terms of metering, PicoScope 6 software which is available for all our USB oscilloscopes has measurement that can be added, in fact you can download the full software from our webpage:

http://www.picotech.com/software

Choose for example the PicoScope 2204.

Most of our oscilloscopes have a signal generator built in, the entry level 2204 oscilloscope has 2 channels and a built in signal generator that can output 100kHz waveforms. It has 2 channels and has a bandwidth of 10MHz. The 2000 or even 3000 series oscilloscopes offer a wide range of products at competitive prices, for more information on each of the products please follow the links below:

http://www.picotech.com/picoscope2000.html
http://www.picotech.com/picoscope3000.html

I suppose the question is what is your budget and what are you looking to measure with the scope.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards
