current spectrum

Post by risting »

One of the things I would like to see with my new picoscope is the current waveform when plugging in some modern equipment like a LED lamp, i e to the 230 V 50 Hz net.
I am thinking about soldering a dirty little 1 ohm resistor right onto a male plug, to be able to watch the voltage drop across this series resistor with an ordinary probe.
Question: is this stupid?
I cannot damage the scope because of some ground problem, can I? The scope is USB powered so not connected to ground, right?
Is it stupid anyway not to buy a current probe instead? If so, why?
