USB 3204 Scope not recognised by Picoscope 6.0 and XP/Vista

Post by mrosher »

I was recently given a Picoscope to use by a colleague but there was little or no advice from him on how to use it and he has since left the company!

As far as I was aware it was working when he left, but this may not be the case!

I have tried to use the online help and assistance and I cant seem to get the unit to work properly with the following setup:-

1) Dell Vostro 1500 Laptop USB1.0 using Windows XP and the shipped software. R. 20

Both of these versions and this hardware yielded the following issue:-

Device enumerates when I pug it in but disappears from the hardware list as the program loads
The software does not detect the scope is connected. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting to get the scope visible in Device manager, this works but the software does not recognise that the scope is connected

2) I have since tried to do this with the Picoscope 6.0 software and I get a similar “no device found” issue.

3) Ideally I wanted it to work on a Vista Laptop (Dell Vostro 1310) so I have also tried Picoscope 6.0 and the device.
Again it seems to enumerate but is then not detected by the Picoscope 6.0 software. This is quite frustrating.

I have tried all of the above with both only the USB cable connected and with the power supply, and 2 different USB cables.

Is there an issue with my device or is it likely to be software/driver related? If the Scope is enumerating its unlikely to be hardware?

Please can someone offer some debug help or ideas on this problem.

The RED LED is lit fromt he moment the scope is connected to the PC (as if it is sampling) but no input signal is applied on the BNC's. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

The software version is what came with the device R20 is stamped on the disc.

This doesnt work and neither does the downloaded copy of the latest v6.0 from the website (r6_5_74)

Are there any other utilities I could try just to see if its an enumeration issue or something with Registry Key settings etc?

As Ive now installed and uninstalled the drivers Im not sure how clean this Laptop is.

Will I ever get it tp work on the Vista Machine? I have tried the r6_5_74 software there but it too fails to recognise the unit even though it enumerate sok in the Device Manager.

More debug suggestions gladly received......

Exact same problem here, but with Picoscope 4227 on Windows 7, using the most updated Picoscope software. Please help.

That is strange really, only thing I can think of is the USB cable, have you tried it on different machines?

Hi.

Yes I have tried 2 cables now (both work with other devices) and different USB ports.

I can confirm the scope enumerates in the USB Hardware profile.

Are there any other diagnostic tools I can try with the scope other than the software?

Id like to know by the end of next week if I need to find an alternative hardware solution.

Your prompt reply would be appreciated as we are in the flux of development and I need this scope operational for a debug activity set for the middle of June.

Can I send the unit to you for setup/testing checks?

Thanks.

Hi!

I have a very similar problem on Windows XP. I install the software (included on the CD) for the PicoScope3204, I connect the device, it is detected as PicoScope without a problem. However, the moment I start the Picoscope6 software, the device seems to turn off (the red LED turns off, and I can hear the faint clicking sound of a relay switching).
The Picoscope6 software than does not detect it.

I tried in on another PC with Windows XP, and it has the same problem.

What is interesting, that this same device works without problems on a Windows 7 machine.

I really need it on my Windows XP workstation, is there a solution for this? The documentation says that Windows XP is supported.

Hi the device will work in windows XP, my thoughts are it could be a USB cable problem, please email support@picotech.com with this query.

Thank you for the hint, as strange as it is, it works with another USB cable.
I never suspected it to be a cable problem, as it did work on a Windows 7 machine with the same USB cable, with which it didn't work in XP.

I had the same problem that windows recognized the picoscope 3425 put the picoscope software did not. I had used an USB extension cable. When I removed the extension cable and connected the picoscope with only the single USB cable, the picoscope software v6 recognized the device again.

I had this issue with SW versions 6.6.13.15 and 6.7.28 and 6.7.27

Once Picoscope starts to run the device will draw more current over the USB. With the extension cable the voltage probably drops below a working level and the connection is lost.

Hi folks,

I have a similar problem and wanted to ask for advice. I'm trying to use a 2206 on a laptop running Win7.

When I use the blue USB cable (1m length approx.) that was supplied with the scope, all works fine.

When I use a CITEC brand USB 2.0 cable (5m length) the laptop doesn't see the scope.

Is this problem due to the length of the cable or is there another factor?

Thanks for any help.

Regards...Mark

The length of the cable will have an effect due to voltage drop across the length. Our cables have thicker cores to reduce voltage drop, and improved grounding.

We do sell a 4.5m cable
