High Voltage Protection (480VAC)

Post by opeleg »

Hello, I have a 4424 scope. I have a few questions regarding 3 phase mains voltage measurement.

1) I understand that to measure 3 phases I will need 3 high voltage differential probes like the TA041. Can I measure a single phase (480V) with a passive 10x or 100x probe?

2) Should I have any concerns about my laptop when measuring high voltage? What kind of protection is there through the usb port? Is it isolated?

Thanks,
Omer

Hi whether it is single phase or three phase, you will still need to use somethign like the TA041.

Why is that? If I have attenuation on the probe, the voltage that scope sees should be either 48V (10x) or 4.8V (100X). Is this not correct?

Thanks,

Hi if you are measuring mains voltage then you need isolated probes that are designed for this voltage. This is a safety requirment really. The probe needs to be CATII or CATIII rated for use in this environment.
