strange behavior on dual display setup

Post by tommyjunge »

Hi,

I'm running Picoscope6 6.5.74.42 on a Win7 dual display setup with extended desktop with the aux display extending the desktop to the LEFT.
When I move the Picoscope6 application to the aux display, the Window minimize, maximize and close buttons (top right) will no longer work and I can no longer move the application window. This has been the case with previous software releases as well. BTW, I'm running 150% font size.

Additional question:
Can Picoscope6 be configured such that it starts with the settings (Volts/div, time, trigger, window position and size) of the previous program run? Can settings be saved to a file for later recovery?

Best regards,
Tom

Hi waht device are you using?

When you are talking about AUX do you mean the trigger source? I dont fully follow, what is the screen res on both screens and is PicoScope 6 fully expanded across both screens?

In terms of saving the settings you can save a file as a setting and then load it next time you start PicoScope6 or even start PicoScope 6 from the settings file.

Kind regards

Sorry for having been unprecise.
With AUX I meant the auxilliary LCD display connected to my notebook to which the Windows desktop was extended.

The desktop was extended on the external LCD to the left and Picoscope6 was visible on the external display only.
I have a Picoscope5203 but this is no hardware issue.

Extend the desktop to an external display to the LEFT, place Picoscope6 on that external display and you'll see.

P.S.
This only seems to happen when the Picoscope6 window is placed on a desktop that is extended to the LEFT, i.e. when the window position shows a negative x-pixel coordinate.
If the external display extends the notebook desktop to the right, there is no such problem.

Hi,

I have just downloaded the new software and I still have this problem.
I have moved the program to the left auilliary screen on the external monitor and maximized it there.

Now I'm stuck! I can no longer tile the window and resize it onto the main screen to regain control. The program is now stuck on my auxiliary screen maximized. I can close it using the exit menu but when reopening it it comes back onto the aux screen maximized.

Now, what do I do?

Best regards,
Tom

Hi Tom can you use Jing, the screen capturing video software to demonstrate this? Not sure if it does the dual display.

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't used the scope in a while.
I have found something I think. It is not the x-coordinate but the y coordinate that seems to cause the problem, see this report:
http://sdr-kits.net/DG8SAQ/Picoscope6%2 ... 0close.pdf

P.S. Another related issue:
Picoscope6 apparently doesn't check on program start if at the last screen position there is a display available. If at the last program run Picoscope was located on the left aux display, but on the next program run the aux display is on the right or gone, Picoscope comes up on an unvisible portion of the screen and I don't know how to get it back visible. Other softwares check if they are visible at their screen location and, if not, start at the default position.

Best regards,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Are you able to right click anywhere in the blue title bar and get the pop up menu to control the window ?

Yes, this does work. That's the way I used to move the window back to an area where I can control it.

This behavior is odd. I have tested several other Windows applications including some I have coded myself and they do not show this behavior. This must be related to a bug in the compiler that is used to create Picoscope6 I suppose.

The more critical problem is the latter one which allows Picoscope6 to come up on an invisible part of the desktop. There you cannot click on the blue bar and if you are out in the field without access to a second display you cannot fix this problem.

Tom

I have just tried Picoscope 6.5.78 on a dual display Windows 7 desktop PC and it behaves as would be expected, if the left screen is physically connected Picoscope starts up on it, provided that was were it was running before, otherwise it will default to the main screen. The state is remembered so that it reverts to the left screen when the display is reconnected.

From your document it appears that the screen sizes are different, can you select the same resolutions for both and select 100% font size and check if the problem still exists.

Have you tried pressing + or + while PicoScope is in focus? This is the generic Windows shortcut for 'move application to next screen on left'. It might move PicoScope to your main screen where you can control it.

I have downloaded Picoscope6.5.80, switched both screens to 1024x768 resolution and switched to 100% font size.

The problem is still existent, but I think I found a clue:

if Picoscope6 was running with maximised window on the aux screen, it will come up on the main screen on the next program start after removal of the aux screen as it should.

In contrast, if Picoscope6 was NOT running with a maximised window on the aux screen, it will come up on the non-existent aux screen on next program start after aux screen removal.
Have you tried pressing + or + while PicoScope is in focus?
This should indeed work, but my IBM notebook does not have a Windows key.

Best regards, Tom

Thank you for the additional information, I have now been able to replicate this on my setup and have passed the information to the development team. Changes will be incorporated into a future release which will be downloadable in the first instance from http://labs.picotech.com/ as a Beta version.

Thank you for your feedback
