What oscolloscope

Post by alex998r »

Hello, this is my first post , I am Alessandro, from Rome,Italy.
Plese I need to chose a scope, it's main purpose is to decode CAN Bus frames running at 1Mbit; it is mounted in a new bike model so I need to decode the protocol to build some interfaces "talking" with it.
The scope will be used also in my lab, I am an ham radio, for up to 10Mhz analog signals
I seen Picoscope 2204, do you think it is ok?
To decode CAN, do I need 2 channels to decode CAN+ and CAN- or 1 channel will be sufficient?
Do you think that also Picoscope 2105 will be suitable for my needs?
Last but not least, I am not a professional so the price should be very low.
Many thanks for your help
regards

Hi any of these scopes will be able to do CAN decoding, perhaps one of the 220x ranges would be more useful as they have two channels.

How long do you want to do CAN decoding for? In which I mean on one screen?

Kind regards

Hi Ziko, thanks for your answer.
Sincerely I don't know for how long it takes to decode all the payload flowing into the bus.
My intention is to put the scope between the bus and the official service tool and "sniff" all the frames that will pass over the can. I will log all the things, and piece after piece, I will try to decode commands and responses. I will try also to decode the frames that contains RPM, Temperatures, Speed etc.,probably a single screen is sufficient to do these things, or not?
After I have some frames decoded, I will try to build an interface to talk with the ECU, I am an experienced Microchip controllers programmer.
Regards
Alessandro

Hi the reason I ask is because this is where memory of the device comes into play. With the 2204 you have 16kS which means if you wanted to look at a rate of 1Mb/s then you would perhaps need to sample at 5-10MS/s. You will get 100us/division so this might not be sufficient to be honest, our new 3000 range would be much better suited as the memory is much larger:
