Time between pulses on two inputs

Post by bastukee »

I like to be able to measure the time between pulses from 2 inputs, the pulses are going to be about 500ms apart but I need a resolution down to microseconds. I being searching on the forums but I can't find this.

I'm currently using PicoScope6 and a Picoscope 3424.

HI,

This depends on a number of factors really

1) Maximum time
2) What the minimum sampling interval is

To give you an example a 3424 has a memory of 512kS, if you were to use a timebase of 50ms/div, this would be 500ms in total. The 3424 can sample at up to 20MS/s. Doing quick calculations at 50ms/division you would get a sample interval of approximately 1MS/s.

In reality you will use about 312kS samples which means your sample interval will be 1.6uS, due to the way the timebases work. So the sample interval starts at 5us, then 2.5us, then 1.25us and then 0.625 us and so on.

Hope this helps let me know if you require any clarification on any of the points I raised.

Kind regards
Ziko

I have a 3424, and for the measurement you want, just set it to 100 mS/div, 2 M samples. It will use streaming mode and sample at 1 MS/s, giving 1 Meg samples for each channel, recording 4 channels at a time. A bit better resolution, and much longer capture. You can also do 200 mS/div, and get 1 MS/s sampling 4 channels, for a total of 2 Meg samples captured per channel, or 8 Meg samples total.
