SERIAL TO ETHERNET TO USB TC-08 Major Problem

Post by Maxime »

Hello,

I am conducting comparison experiments on two types of solar panels. As they are very high and out of reach, there is a long distance between the computer and logger.

I am using an older TC-08 serial logger to measure.
This logger is connected to a serial-to-Ethernet converter.
The ethernet cable runs the whole distance to the computer, where I hook it up to a Ethernet-to-Usb converter.
this is plugged into the PC USB slots.

I run the software and it does not recognize or see the logger when I get to the port page of the NEW SETTINGS. I select TC-08 USB and then nothing shows up, even though I am plugged in and the ethernet lights are solid green.

I then checked several things:

1- Brought the logger down, hooked it to serial port. Works fine.
2-CHecked the power supply to the logger and converter. Works fine.
3-checked another set of data (wind and solar radiation) coming through the converter. Works fine. (incidentally, the wind, radiation and temperature data are all running through the same ethernet cable.)
4- CHecked the ethernet to USB converter by plugging to LAN thorugh it. Works fine.

Out of ideas. And patience. Any reason it isn't working?

Hi Maxime,

Different RS232 to ethernet devices operate in different ways. Which RS232 to ehternet device have you got?

When you say that the "wind, radiation and temperature data are all running through the same ethernet cable." could you explain further what you mean by this?

What voltages are coming out of the Ethernet device? As the pin 7 needs to be held at >7 V and pin 4 needs to be held at <-7 V.

Kind regards

Hi. Sorry to hear about your Problems. Have you considered putting the data through Modems and connecting to the PC serial Port ( If it has one). I know its not an answer to your specific problem but I had a problem with serial data over ethernet a few years ago and ended up using this as we never got the converters to work. Or get a cheap/old Laptop stick up top and collect the data routinely! Or use its network ability to link without conversion to the PC down bottom. How far from the PC is the TC-08? Sorry i can't be more helpful.
