software installation on Windows 98

Post by frog »

Hi,
I'm trying to install my 3204 on an ancient laptop that I've been given to use as a dedicated machine (and why not). Having installed the latest picoscope software I attached the 'scope and am now being asked to locate a file called picopp.cat. There's no sign of this file, nor can I track it down on my existing development PC (running XP), which currently has picoscope version 5 installed (and working).

Can anyone suggest where I can find this file please?

Thanks,
Frog

picopp.inf contains the following lines (near the top):

[Version]
Signature="$CHICAGO$"
...
CatalogFile=picopp.cat

But no sign of the .cat file itself.

Having RTFM I see that only XP and Vista are explicitly supported these days. I downloaded the older version 5.16.2 which does explicitly support Windows 98 but I still have exactly the same problem.

As a slight aside, I would urge the good people at Pico Technology to give some careful thought to continuing to work with Windows 98 (etc) since, being no longer "supported" by Microsoft it is a *relatively* stable platform and I'm sure I'm not the only engineer who has an old laptop that would make a fine piece of lab equipment and won't run anything written in the current millenium.

Any thoughts etc would be most gratefully received.

Hmmm... I skipped the .cat file and version 5 is working (even without it). Version 6 bailed out unceremoniously at this stage.

The rubber has hit the road, so to speak.

Hello Frog,

As you seem to realize, PicoScope 6 requires XP or Vista,.

Your comments regarding Windows 98 are noted, however, as you must know, supporting functionality across obsolete and new operating systems is not a practical proposition.

John

With all due respect, I do it every day.

In the good old days (Tops-10, Ultrix, Sunos, VMS, Primos etc) things were very different.

I love your products and there's no need to diss yourselves.

Hi Frog

Delete the line CatalogFile=picopp.cat and it should allow you to install the device drivers on 98.

Mark
