Hello, I have a question regarding PicoScope 5204.

We need to sample approx. 1.2 sec of a high-speed signal with a rate of approx. 100MSa/s in a single shot, triggered by pulse width of the same signal. Is the 5204 capable of filling the entire sample buffer in such a high rate in one shot?

I tried to simulate this with the PicoScope 6 demo software, but I was unable to "acquire" full 128M samples. How can we transfer 128M samples to the PC? (preferably in a binary file)

We consider buying the 5204 because of the large sample memory, but we need to ensure that the memory is really usable in our case.

Hi Jiri,
The advanced triggering of the new release of PicoScope6 (out soon) will be able to trigger on pulse width (as well as on other conditions). As yet, it will not be able to fill the entire memory in the way you require. You ask for 1.2 seconds at 100MS/sec, ie: 120Msamples, nearly the entire memory. The nearest you can set, using PicoScope6 is 10 divisions at 100mS per division (1 Sec). Request the number of Samples to be 100MS/sec. You will find that the best Sample rate that you can get is 62.5 MS/s and the number of samples is 62.5MS. This because half the memory is being used to buffer new data and the other half holds the previous block of data, which is being transferred to the PC. It should be possible to fill the whole block of memory when using single-shot mode but that is not implemented yet. To do that at the moment you would have to write your own code. We hope to have this in future versions of PicoScope but not yet.

I assume that it is the software what is the limiting factor here, while the 5204 could fill the whole 128M buffer at 125MS/s or 62.5MS/s without problems, am I correct?

Does the same apply to triggering?

Will the new version you mention be capable of saving the whole buffer (or 64MS) to a file in a binary format?

Hi , Peter is away at the moment.

It is true that the Picoscope 6 software is the limiting factor, however we do provide a software API that can achieve this though.

The triggering is a hardware feature that is within the FPGA.

The next release of the software will allow you store half the memory (approx 64 MS) in a text, CSV and Matlab file (binary).
