OSX Sierra compatibility with 6.11.13.2

Post by rushinb »

Good evening,

I am working with PicoScope 6 version 6.11.13.2 on a OSX Sierra (10.12.3) Mac and am having problems with PicoScope 6 locking up and crashing.

It's rather odd actually, if I am actively taking measurements it seems to have no issues. All functionality that I'm using seems to be working properly.

If I allow the scope to sit idle (not taking measurements) the UI closes itself and the taskbar indicates that the program is not responding. Force Quit and restart and the program operates normally until I 'neglect' it again.

Recent turn of events: either I just didn't notice it before or it got worse, the UI crashes even when taking measurements. I'm using a 5204 PicoScope.

Hi rushinb,

After the software crashes, could you please locate the trace.xml file using the instructions from this post and post it here or e-mail it to support@picotech.com please?

There is a new release of the software for Mac OS X and Linux due soon.

Same behavior than rushinb, PicoScope crashes after some minutes of activity.
Details: PicoScope 6.11.13.4
Mono: 4.8.0.495
MacOS: Sierra 10.12.3
Going to System Monitor I observed an uncontrolled memory allocation for PicoScope process. Reaching 2.5Gb (!!) the process crashes.
Please find enclosed the "trace.xml" file as dumped into my system.

Hi jsimo,

What settings are you using prior to the crash? Do you have a settings file that we can test with?

Were you using a different version of Mono prior to this one?

Hi,

I see the same behaviour on my Macbook:

MacOS 10.12.3
Mono version 4.8.0.520
PicoScope version 6.11.13.2
PicoScope 2204A

The program eats memory until it hits about 2,5Gb and then crashes...

Hi tonkuijt,

Are there any specific steps that you are taking prior to the crash?

Are you able to provide a trace file following the crash?

If you go back to a previous version of Mono does the problem still occur?

There is a new version of the software due out soon.

Hitesh

Hi tonkuijt, jsimo and rushinb,

It's possible that there might be an issue related to Mono 4.8.0.

Please try reverting back to an older version e.g. 4.6.0.125 from the Archive pages.

Please note that Pico Technology is not responsible for the content of third party sites.

Hope this helps.

I just got my PicoScope today. When I first installed the software, I was experiencing crashes on OSX 10.11.6 with the "growing memory" symptoms described by others.

Reverting to Mono 4.6.0.125 fixed the problem for me. The memory usage for PicoScope as shown in Activity Monitor appears to be stable around 120-130 MB. (The memory usage seems to creep up slowly, but it is slow enough that it's not a problem.)

I did experience another problem: My Mac went to sleep while PicoScope6 was running (and actively updating the display). When I woke up the computer, PicoScope was unresponsive. Force-quitting and restarting it fixed the problem. This isn't a big problem, just thought I'd mention it.

Well, definitely downgrading to Mono 4.6.0.125 fix the problem.
Thanks!

Hi JMaloney,

Our Development Team are aware of the issue when waking up the computer. Which PicoScope device are you using?

I'm on Sierra (10.12.6) and Picolog works like a charm. When I install Picoscope everything seems fine but when I click on the icon in the app folder the only thing that is happening is the Pico icon jumping up and down in the dock but the software does not open up and start. Mac OS reports that Pico does not respond and I have to force quit to shut the process down.

Any help to solve this issue would be seriously appreciated.

For the first run you may need to leave it bouncing for a few minutes to allow the Mac to sort out the Mono installation.

Thanks a bunch, up and running now.

Some buggy behaviour though, will give feedback later.
